Looking For Hidden Mold In Your Walls
Since mold can grow in both visible and invisible places, it is hard to detect if your home has been afflicted with it. Unless the occupants start feeling one of the many symptoms exposure can cause and wonder if mold is the culprit, then most will continue to live their life, whether they are affected or not affected by it. Some common symptoms of mold include allergy-like afflictions, such as a runny nose, coughing, sneezing, and sinus congestion, while major side effects include respiratory problems, depression, mood swings, and mental instability.
One of the most common places that mold grows is on the walls. Often times, people will simply wipe down the mold with bleach or some other disinfecting cleaner, and sometimes the mold will not return. The only faulty thing about this procedure is you will probably have to make numerous holes to accurately ascertain there is water damage behind the wall. The wall you make a hole in might be mold-free, but the other wall that was not tested might have some form of mold growth already.
Alternately, rather than making a hole, you can cut a small 4x4" section on a wall that you suspect might have water damage. Cutting this bigger section will allow you to see more. Evidence of a leak will show up as water stains. A much bigger cut might be needed for you to see all of the damage behind that wall. Wallpapered walls that you know have been subject to leaking water must be checked immediately. Mold loves wallpaper because it is made of paper.
Home mold test kits are available at an affordable price. If there is a suspicious stain, you can use this pen-like device that has a cotton swab, which will be used to wipe the stain. In a few minutes' time, the applicator will determine if the stain is mold or not. There are also contraptions that test the air and devices that test the moisture levels behind the wall.
